Last week I headed down to the Chariot's Sauna in Shoreditch, London to meet up with fellow blogger Josh. I wanted to meet him for a chat, and interview him for my blog and ask him a couple of things. What I liked was seeing how down-to-earth and chilled Josh was. He has seemingly been doing some pretty far out, crazy stuff over the years (and very controversial stuff too), and I have to admit that I expected him to be somewhat...crazy! lol. Hey you filthy fuckers. This is my last post (I expect) for 2011. So a few things I wanted to talk to you about.

News

It's been a much quieter year for me filming porn. Mostly this is due to a much larger amount of non-porn related filming, which is great for paying the bills :) As of January, I will be working on an ongoing, weekly internet project so I doubt I will be having much more time in 2012 either :(

I had a really nice lunch meeting with Liam Cole from Treasure Island Media about 2 weeks ago in London, and we discussed all things filth. There is a possibility I will be shooting content for TIM, if I can find the right models. One of the things he said to me (amongst many things) was that getting the right models, with the right chemistry was paramount. Before the meeting I had sent him my video of Soccerboy (available to view at Barebackbastards here) and he gave me some great positive feedback. I recognise the "faults" with the video, or at least what I would do differently next time. The thing is, that video, like all my videos to date, have been pretty on-the-fly, and unplanned. In the Soccerboy video, I didn't meet one of the tops until we were filming - I kinda wanted it that way as I knew this guy was a friend of Soccerboys, and so knew the chemistry would be natural. However, I think it is important to note, that no matter how "on-the-fly" and "amateur" the aesthetic of TIM, the models do need to have a certain X-Factor if the video is to be REALLY horny. I personally liked all the guys in the Soccerboy video, and Liam's feedback was mostly technical stuff. I asked him if he would have taken it if I had sent it to him, and he said "almost". lol.

It was interesting to talk with Liam about what turns him on, and what turns me on. We had clear differences, and many cross-overs. In other news, a good friend of mine recently contracted Hep-C at a sex club. He is the 2nd person I know to have caught this horrible disease. As you may be aware, I have been having an online spat with iblastinside, who, unlike me, and hopefully the vast majority of guys who like watching and having bareback sex, makes statements like "if you’re a barebacker, then why the fuck does it matter. We’re on the same team". As if the two things (stealthing and bareback) were the same. They are not! My last entry was to try to highlight how his behaviour is morally/ethically no different to that of a con man. He has written his retort here. I will make this my last mention of the issue (for now anyway - depends how much more stealthing iBlastInside writes about and riles me up in the future, but I really don't see what more can be said on this pathetic matter). To me, this issue is so fucking obvious, it's amazing that iBlastinside can continue to defend his criminal behaviour. So in response to his "defence" where he claims I miss his point so very much:

1. I don’t wander the streets seeking people to stealth. Quite the contrary. I make the distinct point of stating I invite these people into my lair or fuck them at an adult bookstore or sex club. This isn’t some miscellaneous place. It isn’t rape. The sex itself is quite consensual. Both parties agree to the sex, unlike the mugger where one party doesn’t wish to be robbed but the other does.

Quite where one does ones conning is neither here nor there. A street, a sex club, a bank, a workplace, a prison. It's still conning somebody, whether you do it in public, at your own home, or at your victims home. "The sex is quite consesual". Yes, but the stealthing - the thing any sane person would have an issue with - ISN'T. That's the point, and it's that part that is wrong. "Both parties agree to the sex". Yes, but not the stealthing. Isn't that obvious? Isn't THAT what makes iblastinside's behaviour so reprehensible? Rape is a strong word, but surely the thing we consider wrong in the issue of rape is that the victim had their choice in the matter taken away. They were made to do something, or subjected to something, they would not wish to occur. In my "spot the difference" stories everybody was consenting to the things they were aware of, but were NOT given the choice to consent to the things that they were being misled by. So his 1st point misses MY point, so very much!

2. A repairman coming into your home to fix plumbing or some other aspect (in his second example) is an implied contract or an actual contract. As I so explicitly stated, no such contract exists between the two of us engaging in sex. I never explicitly agree to engaging in safer sex.

I totally disagree. iblastinside does not sign a contract before he has sex, of course. BUT, when you show the bottom your intention to use a condom, THERE is the implied contract! Which iblastinside breaks. He is TELLING the bottom through his actions - actions he makes sure the bottom is aware of - "I am putting a condom on". But then, he removes the condom, and breaks the contract. If there was no condom in the 1st place, if the bottom didn't believe he was using one, then of course, this is a different story. He explicitly agrees to engage in safer sex the moment he makes the bottom believe he is...engaging in safer sex!! This is what makes him a con man!

3. Cristian further makes the assumption that I am the source of any exposure of disease. This is a further problem that condom Nazis often assume about all barebackers. We are all puss-filled, infected zombies full of the worst diseases with intent on bugging everyone around us. This simply isn’t so.

I am NOT a condom Nazi. Far from it. I believe that all people have to make their own choices regarding their sexual behaviour. I MAKE bareback porn, so can hardly be a condom Nazi! But this is the crux of the issue - choice! iblastinside does not give his bottoms a choice. He offers them sex. They ask for safe sex. He "agrees". That is the implied contract. But he lies. As for diseases - to be honest, whether you are a puss infected, syphilitic AIDS defined hoispital patient, or totally healthy, you are STILL conning your bottoms if you stealth them - you are still doing something TO them against their will. So what if your spunk could infect them or not? That almost isn't the point. (Although being a barebacker in general, it is a distinct possibility you will infect them with something! iblastinside's insistance on his perfect health when he seems to bareback so much is quite laughable. The point is that, they DON'T want your cum in them, and you make sure it gets there anyway, against their will. This is why ibastinsides behaviour is no different to my examples in my last post. No matter where it happens, or what the technical details happen to be, he is still acting towards another person in a way that is fraudulent, self-seeking and uncompassionate. A bit like the bankers that got us into this financial mess!! If everybody felt the way iblastinside did about other people - using them for their own short term personal gains, to hell with the other persons needs/wants/desires/health, then we would end up - well, where we are actually! Which is why it is a big problem, and, as "James" commented under iblastinsides post, the "antithesis to everything that humanity has been climbing towards". Couldn't put it better myself. Thank God, there are people out there who can think outside their own selfish desires and recognise a greater goal.

Why, for iblastinside, does the sexual realm of behaviour seem so protected and detached from the moral standards we expect from others in a civilised society? It seems that, for iblastinside, his desire to spunk in a hole is so crutial to him, he will mislead, fraud and con men in order to do it, and he assumes that is his absolute right. He believes he isn't acting immorally, because it is his sexual drive he is serving, and so the other man in the equasion does not count. Trust me, I understand the desire! I am a top. I am an addict!! I just choose not to hurt other people to get my fix! And when, in the past I have done things I believe NOT to be treating others as I would wish to be treated, I have regretted it and used it as a lesson for how to behave in the future.

As I said on my twitter, we all have dark fantasies. Taboo is a very real part of most peoples sexual interests. Infact the very fact something is considered a taboo in the 1st place is often what gives it it's erotic kick. Review: Ryan Sullivan's Island

What does Ryan Sullivan think of the idea that Paul Morris is a "murderer"? How does Ryan Sullivan feel about the fact that his older brother does gay porn and doesn't want to see him any more? What does Paul Morris think about the accusations made against him? What makes Treasure Island Media the "most controversial" porn studio?

Well, who knows? We certainly don't find out in Ryan Sullivan's feature length version of his documentary "Island". What, for me, started out as a promising, stylish, evocative documentary about an elusive and controversial pornographer, became a undertaking of style over content.

I think I must be missing something, if you consider some of the reviews. But, for me, if you start a film by quoting people saying your subject is a "murderer", you would think that this would be investigated or questioned, or at least referred to at some point in the remainder of the film. But it isn't. What there seems to be is snap shots of interesting, but not exactly revelatory interviews with some of "Paul's men" - sometimes straight, sometimes gay, sometimes HIV pozitive talking about their life experiences. There's lots of evocative music over slow motion images of the city, or storms over the countryside. There are scant behind-the-scenes footage of when blood seems to hamper shoots. One guy starts to cry during a scene because of his guilt over his boyfriend. We learn, in what turns out to be the only truely revealing part of the film, that the filmmaker Ryan's brother has contacted Paul Morris wanting to do porn. And that Ryan and his brother have not spoken for a long time. But, like the lack of insights into the elusive pornographer himself, we never really find out anything more about what has made the brother's relationship so hostile and distant. We learn some back-story about Ryan's childhood, but also that Paul Morris' porn "ripped (his) family apart". But we don't know how Paul's porn specifically had anything to do with the ripping up of his family, and so thus seems hyperbolic and designed to create an air of menace and a hightened mystique about the company, rather than to actually investigate or reveal how TIM's work seemingly has this power. Hell, even Dawson - the most famous bb bottom in porn that made Treasure Island so well-known isn't even referred to once. Something is missing here surely?

It's an odd set up from the start anyway - because Ryan is kind of "inhouse" - having signed a contract to work for Paul Morris for 3 years. This is explained in the documentary (in the signiture style of white text on a black screen titlecards - we never hear Ryan's voice) and so we are never quite sure how much free reign Ryan had to shoot, how much say Paul had in the final film (probably quite alot) and therefore how much of the film is just plain advertising/promotion or PR for Treasure Island. Like the stylistic devise of text as apposed to voice over, the whole thing is designed to give you a glimpse, keep you distanced and never give you as much as you would like. There are always more questions than answers, and so I guess this is the point. If Paul wishes to remain the "cult" icon we are told he has become, then of course he is not going to let anyone give away his secrets - let alone his face! Which is why, as a documentary about Treasure Island Media, "Island" fails. As a revealing and unorthodox (but ultimtely unsatisfactory) examination of two brother's relationship, binded by their individual relationships to one porn studio - it is certainly unique.

Paul Morris has spoken very eloquently and intellectually in numerous written interviews about his relationship to porn, his thoughts on barebacking, the industry and gay sex in general(whether you agree with him or not). Surely this is what any "documentary" on the studio, it's figurehead and its "men" would at least make parting reference to? None of it is here in "Island". We do not hear from any of the people who work for Paul on these issues, and we do not hear from Ryan himself about any of these issues either. So what is the point? If your film begins with so much hyperbolic exposition about "controversy", murder and cult status, you would assume this to be a statement of intent. A statement that the next hour will give you more insight, argumentation or exploration on these issues.

For me, the role of Treasure Island Media in the gay porn community is fascinating. The fact that men all over the world have tattoos of the company logo branded onto their skin (and I have met a guy in London who has done just this) shows there is something going on here. Surely this is something to be investigated. But to talk about this too much would of course be to unravel the taboo, to remove the mystery that Paul Morris trades and relies on (psychoanalytic theory describes the erotic charge of the taboo). So we cannot then expect such a film from Treasure Island or it's associates. Surely THAT kind of film (a film I would truly like to see) is what an enganged, intrigued documentatarian would want to make. That would be the work of a fan, a critic or just a detached outsider - someone not associated with and on the payroll of Paul Morris. One reviewer likened Ryan Sullivan to Pasolini. In one respect I think he is right. Just like the movie Salo, Ryan's film never quite...cums. There is always a distance from the subject - teasing you but never delivering. You see what you think is something that may be of interest, but you never can quite take hold of it.

Unlike Pasolini however, Paul Morris' unrecognisable face is stood over Ryan's shoulder the entire time, reframing, pulling the camera back, calling cut just before too much is given away or before any real questions are asked. And for this the thing feels fraudulent. In the same way that a corprate commercial can only ever sell its wears, or a party-political broadcast could never truely challenge the politics of the party funding the film (no matter how artistic its execution), Treasure Island Media and Paul Morris definitely approves this message!

So tonight I got a bit bored and remembered I had a sex scene on tape (yes tape, my camera is now getting quite old!!) that I filmed sometime late last year, but had done nothing with because, well it was supposed to be a 20+ gangbang of Andrew Kovacs, and noone showed up. The legacy of 9/11, for me.

We all know the global, political legacy of 9/11. But I have been interested, particularly on this day, to question my personal response to the events 10 years ago, and to question our cultural response to the tragic loss of human life.

We all have our memories of that time - what it meant to us, how it changed us, how we felt as the subsequent wars and jingoistic "clash of cultures" overtook our airwaves. But for me, one thing really stands out that I felt I needed to hightlight today. It is what I have taken away from 9/11 - as someone, NOT from the USA, untouched personally by the events except from the indirect cultural shift.

I found myself watching the poor people in New York 10 years ago running from the dust, or clinging to the side of the buildings, and contemplating the sheer horror and suffering that these people were going though. I thought about all the poor people inside the planes. And, as we all do, imagined myself in that position, and how I would feel, and wondered about how I would react. If 9/11 is a tragedy at all, it is surely due to the loss of human life. The 10 year anniversary today has been focussed primarily on those who lost their lives, and the familys of those victims.

So it got me thinking again about what we deam "tragedy", and for what reason. I asked myself this very simple question: "Why are the 3000 dead on 9/11 so much more important than the 12.4 million people in Somalia who are in urgent need of food and are dying at an alarming rate? Why are those 3000 more important than the 40,000 (or so) people losing their lives every year in the USA due to lack of access to healthcare in a soley capitalist/corporatist system which fails to cover everyone?"

Surely this is as much of a national tragedy, if not more so? For, if we take loss of human life to be our indicator of what we consider "tragic", then so much more needless and avoidable human suffering and death should be at the top of our agendas. But it isn't.

And then I got to thinking about the answer. Ofcourse, we as human's are big on symbolism. 9/11 symbolised, in one morning, the fragility of human existance. The images of the towers were cinematic, visual and biblical in scale. It happened very close to home for America. But more than this - the people who died, on the whole were identifiable. By this I mean, they had similar sounding names. They spoke, on the whole, our language. They had, on the whole, our skin colour. They were, in John Pilgers words, the "undeserving dead". As apposed to the thousands of subsequent deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan that are the "deserving dead" whose lives we just cannot bring ourselves to value, and thus think about.

And so, as I too feel sadness at the tragic and needless loss of life witnessed on 9/11 ten years ago, the legacy of the event for me is that it taught me something. It taught me to value human life, AS human life. For every American or British death that I contemplate, I will ask myself why this means more to me than the death of a non Christian heritaged, non-white, non-English speaking human being - dying in numbers that put 9/11 statistics into relative obsurity. I will question others, when they bring up 9/11 about their feelings on the thousands of needless dead in Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan, Syria etc. Or the 40,000 a year in the USA. Not because this is more important. But because it is of equal importance. Or atleast it should be if our grief at needlessly lost human life is to mean anything at all! Did those who died in the towers only mean something to us (and America) because they died in the towers, on that day? If anyone of those who died on 9/11 had died due to a drive by shooting, or as a result of a loophole in medical insurance the day before the attack - would we even want to know their names? Their deaths are painful soley because of the situation that lead to their deaths? Surely that is doing a grave disservice to the dead. Every innocent life is of value. So today I don't just think of 9/11. I think of humanity and it's need to co-exist in mutual understanding.

We need to put people/humanity before religion and nationality if we are to grow at all. If religion and nationality means more to us than our common humanity, which I think for many it does, then I believe nothing will ever change. This is harder, I believe for Americans because of the very political nature of their country's existence which means they experience much stronger jingoism from school, the media and culture in general as they grow up. But we all do the same thing and forget our common humanity and the multitude of things that make us the same - choosing to focus instead on the dimentional distinctions that seperate us: religion, politics, nationality, skin colour, sexuality etc.

I watched this wonderful film, 9'11"01 September 11 which I urge you to find and watch too. Alejandro González Iñárritu's section from Mexico ends with a wonderful line "Does God's light guide us, or blind us?". It's a quote that I couldn't help but remember as Obama stood at Ground Zero today, mentioning religious faith as if it were the saviour of humanity. Sadly, it isn't quite so simple!

My thoughts on hypocrisy

There's been some bru-ha-ha of late on the bareback blogs about certain performers, namely Chris Gabriel/Marc Dylan, who go from bareback to condom performances. We all know it happened years ago with both Brent Everett and Brent Corrigan. Certain people including Max Sohl have been, in my opinion picking on Chris Gabriel for his decision to not do bareback videos anymore after performing for Treasure Island Media and SX Video. To be honest I don't see what the fuss is about. IblastInside went so far as to say "particular actor’s hypocritical actions". Max Sohl asks us to trust either "what they say" or "what they do". Where is the hypocrisy? Seriously - hypocrisy is saying one thing, and doing another, but in this case, the performer Chris Gabriel/Marc Dylan did one thing, said he regretted it and is now saying he wont do it again. And????

People are suggesting that this is hypocrisy which means they don't know the definition of the term, and they are suggesting that he probably barebacks in his real life. Again I ask, And??? If Chris had said "it's wrong for people to bareback" then I would understand the critisism. But he didn't. He spoke here in a very personal manner, about what he felt was right for him. Marketing or PR or simple sincerity, I don't care. I think the bareback community are just sucking sour grapes. Not everyone barebacks. Some people try it, like it, and decide not to do it again. Some people try it, like it, and only ever do it again. Can't we allow people to make their minds up about such very personal and important things and respect their decisions? Nowhere was Chris being hypocritical.

In a similar situation, I know of a UK based pornstar who never does bb porn, and has said he would never do it in public on his website. I know for a fact that he barebacks in his personal life. A friend of mine said to me that the guy was a hypocrite. But surely, there is a difference between what you do in your private life and what you are willing to do on camera for the whole world to see? There are things I probably do in my own life that I would not choose to try and sell as a lifestyle to others. I have an open relationship with my boyfriend, but I wouldn't try to convince others to do the same, because it is completely up to each individual to decide what is right for them and their relationships. Does that make my a hypocrite? If said UK pornstar had claimed "barebacking is wrong full stop" then yes he would be a hypocrite, but this is not what he has done. He has just made a personal choice not to do it himself ON CAMERA and stated as such.

I actually have some respect for such performers - because they realise, as I do, that porn is not mere entertainment, but upholds ideologies, like any media, like any language. People learn from it, get ideas from it, build identifications with the performers etc. So chosing not to have bareback sex (even after you have already done so) on camera is NOT a bad, immoral or hypocritical thing to do. It is a considered decision which recognises the implications for the gay community. I may not make such decisions, you may not, but good for them!! Some people are able to think outside of their scrotum for a second and look at a bigger picture.

It seems that when people choose to not protect themselves, the barebacking community jumps for joy as if somehow the pornstars are making the right, only truthful decision. But when they decide that actually, despite what they do in their personal life, they want to play it safe on camera - which is a completely different thing (they are PERFORMING for others after all), we jump down their throats. Hell, maybe, just maybe they realise the condom route gives them more options and a longer shelf life. Again, so what?? This is capitalism after all, and we all have to put food on our tables.

I love bareback as much as the next slut, and will continue to watch it and share the good stuff I find - perhaps even shoot more of it. But I wont bad mouth people for making decisions in their own lives which have very real implications for them, simply because it may mean less wank material for me. Ok it's official. I am in love with Berlin.

Last weekend a buddy and I went to Berlin for 4 days of non-stop sightseeing and sex! And when I say non-stop, I mean non-stop. I probably overdid it because now I feel like shit and my poor body is taking its sweet time to recover!! All I am left thinking is, I wish London partied as hard, well and as sleazy as Berlin does!

We started our weekend on Thursday visiting a few of the bars, including the famous Tom's Bar in the Nollendorfplatz area. It was a relatively relaxed evening, trying to get our heads around the etiquette of the bars. Things don't really kick off till late it seems. In the darkrooms, people were just mingling around, laughing, talking and bumping their heads and walking into walls! lol.

We spent Friday night the east of the city, at Lab.oratory and then finished the night (and early morning)back at Nollendorfplatz in a little Bar called Bull. Firstly, let me say that Lab.oratory is the best club I have been to. EVER!! It reminded me of the Hoist in London, but set in a much larger, industrial building (in the middle of nowhere). The place was like a maze, with so many rooms, cages, corners, cubby holes etc. People wore what they want - so the guys were dressed in everything from streetwear, topless, to full fetish. I liked that because it wasn't strict and there was a feeling of freedom in what you did and how you looked. It was 2 for 1 drinks night too and so the place was heaving. I got totally drunk and it only cost me something like 10 euros! Me and my buddy split up and had our own fun, before meeting at around 5am to head back to Bull where apparently the party continues!! Luckily, our apartements are a 5 min walk from Bull so we knew we could stumble home easily enough. Bull is an odd little place. A normal small bar with a darkroom out back. One thing any sex addict knows is that it is important to have decent washroom facilities at these kind of places because, well, things can, and do get mucky :-\ The toilets at Bull had no tissue paper in them and they had only one sink. Considering how many people were crammed into that darkroom, it was really stupid! But nevertheless, the sex was amazing.

We finished off our weekend (we did lots of sightseeing, but you guys aren't reading this for my thoughts on the Holocaust memorial are you??) by going to a party called Coffe and Cream at New Action, again in the Nollendorfplatz area. Although I prefered Lab.oratory as a venue, the party here was amazing, with the hottest guys I have ever seen in one room - all fucking bareback. Yep, this is when I fell in love with Berlin! haha.
